Sweden’s Opportunities in Southeast Asia – Three Perspectives on Growth, Energy Transition and Industrial Expansion
Southeast Asia continues to emerge as one of the world’s most dynamic growth regions. Urbanisation, a rapidly expanding middle class, and large-scale investments in energy, infrastructure and industry are creating significant opportunities for Swedish companies. In three of our recent articles, we highlight different aspects of this development – from financing and expertise as competitive advantages, to the region’s massive energy transition and concrete expansion opportunities for Swedish businesses.
Financing and expertise: Sweden’s competitive edge in Southeast Asia
Sweden’s exports to Asia amounted to SEK 234 billion in 2024, with growth now clearly driven by Southeast Asia. Urbanisation, a growing middle class and increasing demands for sustainable infrastructure are creating substantial demand for advanced technological solutions – areas where Swedish companies are particularly strong. Attractive financing through the Swedish export credit system further enhances the competitiveness of Swedish offerings.
Southeast Asia invests heavily in renewable energy
The region is facing a major shift away from fossil fuels towards renewable energy sources. ASEAN countries are aiming for climate neutrality by 2050, requiring investments of as much as USD 190 billion. At the same time, climate challenges are acute, with more frequent extreme weather events and rising sea levels. This creates significant opportunities for Swedish companies with strong positions in electrification, energy storage, smart grids and sustainable technologies.
